JOHANNES FRANZ

(Ιερ. 36,6).

ΟΜΙΛΕΙΤΕ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ - PALAESTRA

We are not the first who have taught Ancient Greek with the historical pronunciation and taking as starting point a well command of the modern form of the language... Have a look to this method published in... 1894!!!

There is also a Latin method published by the same publishing house. It looks quite good:

WHY ORAL LATIN?

By Susan Thornton Rasmussen
The Paideia Institute

Should all students and scholars of Latin use an oral approach? This increasingly common question is important as we consider whether we as teachers are utilizing the best possible methods for our purpose—whether that purpose be overall linguistic competence, or strictly the ability to read canonical texts. Five motivations for the use of oral Latin by teachers and students of any level are described: deepening the understanding of Latin, developing fluency in reading, offering variety for students of different learning styles, historical success of the method, and motivating learners. This paper delineates these motivations and explores to what extent oral Latin is effective for each.

LEARNING LATIN

Our objective is to facilitate the learning of classical languages by all those who for various reasons cannot attend classes in person or who simply prefer to learn from their own homes, taking advantage of the ease and time savings found in learning via videoconference. We offer two types of classes: small-group classes (of 2-3 people) and individual classes.

In the Latin classes we use the books from the series LINGVA LATINA PER SE ILLVSTRATA by Professor Hans Henning Ørberg, recognized worldwide as one of the best and most efficient methods for teaching Latin. It is a course written entirely in Latin based on the contextual inductive method in which each new word or grammatical concept can be deduced from the context. The student that successfully completes the 56 chapters in the series is well prepared to fluently communicate in Latin and to comfortably read the great authors of Latin literature.

EPITOME HISTORIAE SACRAE

Charles François Lhomond (1727 -1794) was a French priest. He spent twenty years as an educator at the Collège du Cardinal-Lemoine in the Latin Quarter of Paris, and afterwards was professor emeritus at the University of Paris.
His most famouse works are "De viris illustribus urbis Romae" and "Epitome Historiae Sacrae", texbooks written entirely in a very elegant and clear Latin.

We provide you the opportunity to listen the audio-book edition of Lhomond's "Epitome Historiae Sacrae" read by Professor Aguirre, with the ecclesiastical pronunciation.

The Greek course is richly rewarding as it is a means of building up vocabulary and studying grammatical aspects of the classical language starting from the variety of the language spoken today.

The classes are imparted in Greek following a methodology tracing back to the Byzantine tradition which allows the student to have an entire vision of the evolution of the language from the Classical period to present day. The ultimate objective is to be able to read and enjoy the Classics in their original language.

HOW DO YOU LEARN A LANGUAGE?

In the Renaissance epoch Latin was studied just as modern languages are done today. At first the student learnt to speak and think entirely in Latin with the aid of dialogues his tutor prepared beforehand to achieve the ultimate goal. Thus the student became familiar with the use of the vocabulary of the language and in a relatively short time the pupil was able to converse and understand simple texts without resorting to grammatical structures.

With this natural and direct method men and women from the Renaissance period were capable of maneuvering Latin with all the craft and skill at their command very similar to the students of today who study modern languages. The learners attained a high level so that on entering  university they were capable of following the classics related to any discipline in Latin and could express themselves in writing in the same language.

LATIN LESSONS ONLINE

LATIN LESSONS VIA THE INTERNET WITH CLASSICS AT HOME
Lingua Latina per se Illustrata will be used although we can also utilize other manuals based on natural methods such as Ecce Romani or the Latin courses from Oxford and Cambridge.
In our classes we will mainly focus on the use of the language giving priority to building up vocabulary and speaking the language fluently. Grammar is assimilated through conversation in the same way as in the process of the learning of modern languages.
Moreover, we will also provide materials that we ourselves have developed such as audio recordings, lessons on video and exercise books.

LIDDELL & SCOTT LEXICON

Today we suggest to our friends the abbreviated electronic Liddell-Scott dictionary (LSJ) in its Greek version. We strongly recommend this lexicon in which the words are explained in the same language wich we learn. The full version is available at the following link.

DIALOGUE BETWEEN TWO DOGS (CERVANTES)

Some ignorant persons interlard their conversation with Latin apophthegms, giving those who do not understand them to believe that they are great Latinists, whereas they can hardly decline a noun or conjugate a verb.
Scip. That is not so bad as what is done by some who really understand Latin; some of whom are so absurd, that in talking with a shoemaker or a tailor, they pour out Latin like water.
Berg. On the whole we may conclude, that he who talks Latin before persons who do not understand it, and he who talks it, being himself ignorant of it, are both equally to blame.
Scip. Another thing you may remark, which is that some persons who know Latin are not the less asses for all that.
Berg. No doubt of it; and the reason is clear; for when in the time of the Romans everybody spoke Latin as his mother tongue, that did not hinder some among them from being boobies.
Scip. But to know when to keep silence in the mother tongue, and speak in Latin, is a thing that needs discretion, brother…
